Marcia Soanes, Artist

Marcia Soanes Auckland ArtistMarcia is a local artist who works in acrylics on canvas and specialises in Auckland streetscapes. Her inspiration comes from buildings which have survived the modernisation of the inner city. Her work portrays the “soul” and character of buildings, with the use of bold brush strokes and vibrant colours.

She has had three successful exhibitions, French Art Shop (twice) and Studio One (2019) as well as a featured artist in the NZ Art Magazine 2019. The concept behind her streetscapes is to capture the mood and era past and present. This is often achieved by combining the historic buildings with a modern car or people in the paintings.

Marcia is largely self- taught, however, has attended some art classes over the years at Whitecliffe College of Art, Browne Art school, and Studio one.
Marcia’s work is a moment in time in our changing city captured forever.

Born 1956 Morrinsville (Waikato).

1979 Moved to Auckland to work (in auto parts sales) and reside.

1993 Diagnosed with fibromyalgia (chronic pain) she left full time work and became interested in painting. Started with oils on board and attended several part time classes at Whitecliffe Art College (Auckland).

First Solo exhibition 1994 at The French Art Shop Gallery (Ponsonby Road) a sell out exhibition. She went on to attend part time classes over the years at Art Station (Ponsonby road) inc life drawing, charcoal drawing etc.

Second exhibition 1995 at French Art Shop Gallery was a shared one with another artist. Also successful.

From 1996 she began to work more with acrylics and on stretched canvas up till 2000 when Marcia had a 13 year break from painting and creating. She was studying full time at University and after that part time work.

2013 she resumed painting and found her style had become more refined, but had still retained her love of painting and capturing on canvas the historic buildings of Central Auckland.

Marcia has mostly resided in the central city and this suits her life style and nourishes her creativity. She attended some part time classes again at Studio One (Art Station) and Browne Art School.

2019 Solo exhibition at Studio One “Auckland Streetscapes” was very successful.

Marcia was also written up in the 2019 Jan The New Zealand Artist Magazine as a featured artist. However, as she states she is driven by the desire to explore her boundaries and push limits with colour and creativity.
